Neighbors' deer-feeding argument turns deadly in New Brighton

Posted: Updated:
NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. (KMSP) - An argument over feeding deer in a New Brighton, Minn., neighborhood escalated into a shooting that left one person dead and another hospitalized on Monday evening.

Police arrested Neal Zumberge, 57, who lives across the street from Todd Stevens and his girlfriend Jennifer Cleven -- the couple he's accused of shooting. There was apparently years-long feud between the three of them because the couple had been feeding deer in the neighborhood -- something Zumberge allegedly claimed caused his Lyme disease.

Police were called to the 2500 block of Knollwood Drive at about 8:30 p.m. Stevens was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound and Cleven is recovering at Hennepin County Medical Center; however, her exact condition is unknown.

Neighbors told Fox 9 News they knew the dispute would likely escalate, but they never imagined it would end in fatal violence; however, this isn’t the first time police had been called to the neighborhood to settle the argument. New Brighton Police Chief Bob Jacobson said the victim's live-in girlfriend has an active restraining order against Zumberge, and he added that it is legal to feed deer in the city.

Police are collecting evidence and conducting interviews to further investigate the shooting. Zumberge turned himself in shortly after it occurred, but investigators say his ultimate motive is unclear. Police believe a shotgun was used in the slaying.

Zumberge could face attempted second-degree and second-degree murder charges. Prosecutors tell Fox 9 News they expect to file formal charges by noon on Wednesday.
