Denton City Council passes ban on texting while driving

Posted: Updated:
DENTON, Texas - Texting and driving will soon cost violators up to $200 in Denton.

Tuesday night, the Denton City Council unanimously passed a texting and driving ordinance.

The ordinance fines drivers $200 if they're caught using their phones for anything besides a phone call.

The traffic safety commission says it's a decision the city believes will make it streets a lot safer.

There are some exceptions, like emergency vehicles, law enforcement and cars that are stopped out of traffic.

The ban also does not apply to driving on interstates.

The ban goes into effect in two weeks.
