Quinn: Committee's subpoena approval is "politics"

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Gov. Pat Quinn says a move by a legislative committee to grant subpoena powers to investigate his troubled anti-violence program is "politics as usual."

The Chicago Democrat made the comments in Springfield on Tuesday following a memorial ceremony honoring firefighters.

He says it's a "political time of year" with less than six months to go until the November election.

The Legislative Audit Commission voted 10-1 in favor of the Republican state Sen. Jason Barickman's motion Tuesday. Four committee Democrats joined the majority.

Quinn's Neighborhood Recovery Initiative Program is already the subject of Cook County and federal probes. Quinn credits himself with identifying the program's problems and disbanded the agency that ran it.

But Republicans say that taxpayer money was misused for political gain.
