Bucks County Woman Starts Program For U.S. Military Kids

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. - The military lifestyle can be tough on any family, especially its youngest members.

Sometimes deployments, moving from base to base and financial hardships can prevent a child from having a traditional childhood.

A Bucks County woman is working to change that.

Fox 29’s Drew Dickman has the story.

Controlling a group of kids at a birthday party can be impossible, unless there’s cake.

3-year-old Nicholas Dietz blew out the candle on his Ninjago themed birthday cake in front of his friends on joint base Mcguire-Dix-Lakehurst

"After he realized that was his cake, he was telling me before I brought the cake out that he wanted all his friends to eat the head and he could eat the belly. So he was very excited," his mother said.

The final touch on Nicholas' ninja themed party came courtesy of Caitlin Koether- Sumner.

"Military families give so much as it is. It’s the least my family can do to give back," Sumner said.

Caitlin started the free cakes for U.S. military kid’s chapter after taking part in a similar organization at Fort Hood, where her husband was stationed until September.

She has seen first-hand what kids of military service-members can go through.

"I want to make one thing constant for them, no matter what. I want them to have a birthday cake," she said.

She makes any style of cake based on request.

And an army of volunteers helps her make some of them.

"Every time I finish a cake, I always tell myself it's definitely filled with love," Caitlin said.

Her husband Jeff served our country for 11 years, deploying to Iraq three different times.

He couldn't be prouder of his wife.

"Her doing this sort of keeps me as part of it, even though I’m no longer serving," he said.

Caitlin's goal was also to help ease the financial pressure a child's birthday can sometimes bring families stationed on post.

Nicholas might not understand that while devouring gobs of frosting, but his mother does.

"It's one less thing, like all of my decorations are very frugal, I mean this is a pillow case with sharpie writing on it, so I think it really helps where we don't have to worry about that," his mother said.

Caitlin says she’s started more than two dozen partnerships with other bases from coast to coast.

There are even talks of expanding to military bases overseas.
