A 15-year-old Plano girl died Saturday from Type 1 diabetes complications, and now, a social media push for the band she loved to perform at the summer camp she attended is going viral.
For Nicole Wilson’s birthday gift, she was surprised with tickets to see One Direction in concert in August at AT&T Stadium. Following her death, her family wasn’t sure what to do with the concert tickets, and wondered if maybe the band could dedicate one of their hits and Wilson’s favorite song, Story of My Life, to her.
Wilson’s sister, Kelly, began tweeting the request to the band. Within hours, there were thousands of retweets with the hashtag #SingForNicole.
This year would have marked Nicole Wilson’s 10th summer at Camp Sweeney in North Texas, which is a camp for children with diabetes. Wilson always insisted that the camp played One Direction songs.
The social media campaign quickly grew into a fundraiser for Camp Sweeney.
The original goal was to raise $3,000 to send a camper with diabetes to the camp this summer in Wilson’s name. That goal has been reached, and the goal is now to reach $6,000 to send two campers to camp.
