3 Pit Bulls Euthanized After Fatal Mauling Of 4-Year-Old

Posted: Updated:

A 4-year-old is dead after being mauled by a group of pit bulls, Delaware State Police say.

The attack happened Wednesday afternoon at a Felton home. According to state police, a mother and her 4-year-old son were visiting a friend, and the boy was outside playing with three pit bulls when the attack happened.

The mother tried to stop it, but her son could not be saved. She was also bitten.

The pregnant mother was transported to Kent General Hospital, where she is being treated for her injuries as well as observation.

Two HVAC repairmen working at the house at the time also attempted to save the young child by fending off the animals with PVC piping.

Police say the boy had been around the dogs before.

The three dogs were removed from the home by the Delaware Animal Care and Control.

On Thursday morning, the First State SPCA reported that the dogs have been euthanized, and their remains will be sent for further rabies testing.

Captain Sherri Warburton, head of Delaware Animal Care and Control, reported that the dogs were unvaccinated and they were not spayed or neutered.
