Dialup Internet still exists, and it's profitable

Posted: Updated:

Remember the sound of AOL's old dialup modem tone?

It turns out, that old-school way of logging on is still making AOL a lot of money. On Wednesday, the company reported first quarter earnings of $538 million. $138 million of it was generated by dial-up internet service. AOL still has 2.4 million domestic subscribers.

Those numbers make sense when you look at the national broadband map from the Federal Communications Commission. The white areas don't have broadband, so a big chunk of the country still is without high speed internet connection.

"Flyover states where broadband penetration can't get there because of the wiring at hard to get there so they're using what works," says Lance Ulanoff, chief correspondent and editor-at-large of Mashable. He says sometimes the old technology -- like the flip phone, the fax machine, and pagers -- works.

"Doctors still use pagers," Ulanoff says. "When we first started with instant communication we used a pager."

Use what works for you.
