2-Alarm Fire In Kensington Damages Businesses

Posted: Updated:

Kensington, Pa.-A fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, near York and Front Streets, next to the SEPTA El Station.

Fox 29’s Bruce Gordon reports.

Fire officials say the fire began in an active business. It's believed to be some kind of a discount store.

The owners of which had apparently closed up for the day about 15 minutes before this fire was reported.

Two businesses were gutted, and another badly damaged. There were no injuries as a result of the blaze.

“It was chaos. There were fightfighters everywhere, flames everywhere, it was nuts,” one witness said.

The size and scope of the blaze brought 75 firefighters and nearly two dozen pieces of equipment to the scene. They were forced to play defense, stand back and drown the flames due to blockages near entrance.

SEPTA closed its York-Dauphin station and the elevated track at the top of Front Street as a precaution. Riders were shuttled by bus. The track closure allowed firefighters a better view of the situation.

“This place did not have an alarm system or any sprinklers. So, no fire protection that we could find out that we can find at this time,” said Philadelphia Fire Department Commissioner Derrick Sawyer

A jewelry store sustained smoke and water damage.

There’s still no sign of activity at the SEPTA El station. Firefighters continue to soak the building at this hour.

The fire itself was put under control in just over two hours, however, they'll be here throughout the evening making sure the spot hot spots do not flare up.

Fire investigators are expected to be on the scene first thing Friday morning to try and get a gauge on what exactly started the fire.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
