Creating healthy dish is elementary for young chef

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - Mary Jane Ware could be on her way to becoming a famous chef in the future. But first, she has to get through elementary school.
The second grader, who formally attended Wattles Elementary in Troy, was just crowned the cooking queen in the national Sodexo Future Chef Challenge.
This year's mission was to create a healthy sandwich for kids - made by kids.
Ware's cucumber boat sandwich became an instant hit with judges in the national contest.
Her cucumber dish features tuna, string cheese, tomatoes, soy bacon bits, mayonnaise, and spices.
The 8 year old also created a youtube entry as she was preparing for the title. She was the only contestant from Michigan and the youngest in the competition.
Ware's mother says Mary Jane's passion for cooking began at an early age. "She would crawl in the kitchen and play in the pan cupboards. And the tupperware was one of her toy areas when she was a baby," says Brie Ware.
Now that Mary Jane has the top chef title, she's letting her win soak in. The 8 year old says with a big smile, "I don't know how to explain it, but I'm proud of me."
