K2 strain that causes overdoses produced in Dallas, police say

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS - Police believe the synthetic marijuana that sickened dozens of people across the state was produced in Dallas.

The Austin Police Department announced Friday on Twitter that it appears a strain of K2 called "The Walking Dead" or "Dead Man Walking" is responsible for the overdoses.

About 100 people were admitted to hospitals in Dallas and at least 40 more were hospitalized in Austin during the first few days of the month.

They had symptoms such as psychosis, aggressive behavior, blackouts and an elevated core temperature, police said.

“Some of them were extremely agitated, needing sedation and needing several people to keep them safe from themselves," said Dr. Jim D’Etienne with Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Synthetic marijuana doesn't usually show up on a toxicology screen, so doctors didn't know exactly what they are treating. But police have followed up with some of the patients.

Investigators in Dallas and Austin are working closely to find the source of the bad batch of drugs, APD said.
