DC police to launch pilot program for on-body cameras for officers

Posted: Updated:

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is moving forward with a pilot program to put cameras on officers.

She told a D.C. Council Public Oversight Committee last Friday that she has the funding and will roll out several types of cameras to determine the best technology for her officers and their needs.

A report from the Office of Police Complaints about officer on-body cameras encourages Lanier to establish an advisory board, including a comprehensive policy governing things like video creation, access and usage.

The union representing about 3,600 officers supports the cameras, but cites concerns over privacy issues.
