It appears inevitable that the home rule debate in the Dallas Independent School District will be put to a vote. So a Dallas lawyer is trying to calm the controversy and bridge the gap between supporters and skeptics.
Mark Melton told FOX 4 he hopes to broker a moderate proposal for changes in the district – changes that everyone can agree on.
"At this point the rhetoric has gotten so divisive that my concern has shifted to what kind of damage does this type of debate do to the city, especially along racial lines. And so the idea here is to go out, talk to all sides, try and see if there is room in the middle for some consensus and come together on a few ideas that might be good for kids and the district ," he said.

When the petition is turned in, DISD trustees will have to appoint a 15-member commission to write a new charter. It would go before DISD voters in November.
