Changes likely to Dallas bike helmet law

Posted: Updated:
The City of Dallas is one step closer to repealing a nearly two-decade-old bike helmet law.

A Dallas City Council committee recommended changing the helmet law, which was written almost 20 years ago that requires all riders to wear a helmet.

There are two options on the table: getting rid of the law completely or removing the requirement for adults and maintaining the rule for kids 17 and younger.

The repeal is designed to remove an obstacle to the city's bike sharing program set to launch this summer in Fair Park and potentially roll out to the entire city in a year or two.

The full council will discuss changes to the helmet law later this month.
