Officials to survey Texas Panhandle wildfire toll

Posted: Updated:
FRITCH, Texas - Teams of emergency officials will comb a 4-square-mile area of the Texas Panhandle to assess the damage from a wildfire and search for potential victims.

Texas A&M Forest Service spokesman Troy Duchneaux says the crews will mount a door-to-door search Tuesday of the area around Lake Meredith about 30 miles northeast of Amarillo.

Duchneaux says the fire that started Sunday near Fritch was about 65 percent contained Tuesday. Fire crews have been focusing on hotspots and buildings still smoldering.

He says the fire has destroyed 156 structures, including at least 89 homes, and forced about 2,100 people to evacuate. No injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service says Tuesday's forecast for the area includes a chance for showers with highs in the 60s and winds gusting to 25 mph.
