(WJBK) -- A cat is credited with saving a boy's life after fending off an angry dog.

Security video from the front of the family's Bakersfield, Calif. home shows the little boy named Jeremy playing. A dog next door approaches him, suddenly attacking him, biting his leg, and shaking the boy violently. Within seconds, Tara the cat comes running out of the house and pounces at the dog, which lets go of the boy. As Jeremy's mom runs to her child, Tara literally follows the dog, chasing him away towards the house next door.

The boy needed about a dozen stitches, but it otherwise doing well.

"I've never seen anything like it", says the boy's father, Roger Triantafilo, who posted the video on YouTube Wednesday. It has been viewed over 5 million times.

He thinks it was the cat's "motherly instinct". Whatever it was, it probably stopped what could have been a much nastier attack, according to Jeremy's mom Erica.
