UCC Potential New Track Field Angering Residents

Posted: Updated:
Cranford, New Jersey (My9NJ) - If you’ve driven through Cranford, New Jersey lately you’ll see signs posted all over that read: “Stop flooding, stop UCC Field”. So what is that exactly? It’s a track field that Union County College wants to install for their new track program.

However, residents like Marlene Buckman think this field is a bad idea because it will cause flooding.

“Union County College is taking down 700 trees on about 4.7 acres and they’re gonna build a combination soccer and track field. Our biggest concern is just the proximity to the houses, all the noise, the environment. They’re taking down 700 beautiful trees, they’re 60 foot beautiful trees, there’s lots of wildlife here and we also have flooding concerns,” she explained.

The Vice President and Executive Assistant to the President of UCC, Dr. Stephen D. Nacco, said that this field will actually mitigate flooding problems in the area. He said the bigger issue here is that the college has a new track team and they did really well last year.

“We’ve spent two-and-a-half years looking throughout the county for something we can use. Right now our athletes are at ten different locations for practice or playing the games and so every home game is an away game,” he explained.

The school has been working on this problem since 2011 and right now they are pretty much out of all other options.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
