PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Norma Lycett and her friends are celebrating her 70th birthday with a morning hike up Camelback Mountain.

"I bring pretty of water, I wear good shoes," said Norma Lycett.

"Yesterday I went and bought brand new hiking shoes, make sure I don't twist my ankle, I almost twisted my ankle once," said Diana, another hiker.

Along the trail at Echo Canyon there are new reminders for all hikers of just how difficult the one mile trek to the top can be.

"They give a list of everything, what you should bring, an idea of what the hike is like," said Chelsea McHale.

Chelsea McHale knows the dangers all too well. On May 4th, 2011 her brother Clint, just 25 years-old, went off trail and climbed without safety equipment. He fell to his death.

On Thursday, the safety signs went up.

"There's a warning that someone has died on this mountain. Before they have his picture, his story, it could happen to you," she said.

Clint's first safety sign is located right here in Echo Saddle; this is an area where people tend to stop and rest and often go off trail.

"I thought there's so many lives that could be saved just because they read his story," said McHale.

Chelsea hiked to her brother's sign this past weekend; she listened and watched as hikers like Norma read her brother's story.

"It's so wonderful, if you just follow the rules," she said.

Chelsea worked with the City of Phoenix for three years to get the signs placed on Camelback Mountain.
