Singing housekeeper helps heal at St. Anthony Health Center

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Music makes everything a little bit better, at least that's the way one metro housekeeper who does her work to the sound of her own tune feels -- and when she lifts her voice, it lifts spirits.

Some argue that laughter is the best medicine, but music is a close second at the St. Anthony Health Center. If you listen closely in the halls of the senior care center, you can hear the sound of Wanda Adams' soul.

"Some people say, 'Whistle while you work,'" she said. "I sing while I work."

Whether she's cleaning a resident's room or doing laundry, her amazing voice helps turn whatever she's doing into a labor of love.

"I think almost every day I come in here, I'm singing a song or something," Adams told Fox 9 News. "When I'm doing things, you can get those trying times. You tape into that little song in your head to get over the hump, and the next thing you know, you've accomplished what you were trying to do."

After listening to her, it's no surprise that Adams grew up in the church. In fact, that's where most of her favorite songs come from.

"Gospel, country, R&B -- I had to open up a little bit to the rap stuff that started coming," she said.

Even though the canary in the aviary doesn't like to sing, the home's other songbird isn't afraid to croon. For that, residents are thankful.

"Wanda has a gift for knowing when someone is having a rough day, they are feeling down," Marian Severson said. "She will go into that room and start working and it just comes out of her."

It's her ability to make residents feel at home that makes Adams unique, and although it may be her voice that moves people, that's because the song always comes from her heart.

"I want them to feel peace, a sense of relaxation, and a sense of wellbeing -- and knowing they are not alone," Adams said. "No matter what the situation is, you are not alone."

Adams sometimes gets the residents to sing along with her. Some of their favorites are "Jailhouse Rock" and "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
