BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. - Three people are dead and four people are injured after a wrong-way driver caused a crash on Interstate 17 southbound, closing the highway near Sunset Point Rest Area, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Carrick Cook.

DPS says the accident occurred around 4 a.m. Friday when a car crashed head-on into a minivan in the southbound lanes of I-17.

Inside the minivan was a family of six: three adults were killed and three people were injured, including one child.

Cook says the adults were related somehow. The child's father is reportedly among the dead.

The wrong-way driver is in critical condition and expected to survive. DPS officials say the driver was high on prescription drugs and could face second degree murder charges.

DPS says it received multiple 911 calls about the wrong-way driver heading north from the Phoenix area. A half-dozen officers and a DPS helicopter were trying to intercept when the collision occurred.

Cook says the wrong-way driver was speeding excessively, making it difficult for DPS officers to get ahead of him to lay down stop sticks.

The southbound lanes have reopened after being closed throughout the morning. Northbound I-17 remained open.

The three victims were identified as Evan Christian Hendriadi, 50, Jenny Sudjono, 70, and Lioe Kim Tjhiuw, 78. All were from Indonesia.

This wrong-way crash comes less than a week after another wrong-way driver crashed into off-duty Mesa Police Officer Brandon Mendoza. He didn't survive the collision.
