Bedford man convicted of murder sentenced to death

FORT WORTH, Texas - A Tarrant County jury ruled Friday that a man who brutally stabbed to death his ex-girlfriend and her son will get the death penalty.

Cedric Ricks was convinced of capital murder earlier this month for killing Roxann Sanchez and 8-year-old Anthony. Sanchez's 12-year-old son Marcus was also stabbed, but survived. Jurors deliberated for more than six hours on Friday before reaching their verdict.

During the trial, Marcus told jurors that his mom and Ricks argued at their Bedford apartment the night of May 1, 2013, and that Ricks took a knife out of a kitchen drawer and began stabbing the three of them.

Ricks testified Friday morning that he only stopped the attacks when he saw his toddler son walk around the corner. That child was not hurt.

"I was upset. Things happened. I don't know…" he said.

Ricks tried to argue the murders were in self-defense. During cross examination he said he was tired of everyone looking at him like he is an animal or monster.

But, he admitted he went too far.

"When you looked at three people lying on the floor lifeless, did you think you might have overreacted?" asked Prosecutor Bob Gill.

"Yes sir," Ricks said.

Defense attorney Steve Gordon told jurors there is no good explanation for what his client did other than that there is something at his core he couldn't control.

Prosecutors argued he deserves the death penalty because he "is a completely remorseless and unrepentant child murderer."

"He is a murderer. He is a psychopath. There is no reason this defendant should not receive the death penalty," said Prosecutor Robert Huseman.
