CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A semitrailer truck driver has been cited by police after making an illegal turn in front of a CTA bus on the South Side, causing a crash that sent 11 people to hospitals Friday afternoon.

The crash happened about 12:35 p.m. near the intersection of 79th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic said.

A CTA Route 79 bus and the semi were both heading north on Cottage Grove when the semi made a right turn in front of the bus and the vehicles collided, according to CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis.

Four adult passengers on the bus were taken to hospitals in good condition and six others in fair condition with minor neck and back pain, according to the CTA and Fire Media Affairs spokesman Juan Hernandez. Their genders and ages were unknown.

The bus driver was also taken to a hospital to be treated for stress, Lukidis said.

The man driving the semi received one citation for making an improper right turn in front of a bus, police said.

The bus sustained minor damage, and normal service had resumed by 1:30 p.m., she said.
