Posted: Updated:
FOX 5 has new information about a double-murder in Putnam County.

Authorities have determined what killed Shirley Dermond. Her body was found in Lake Oconee near Wallace Dam on Friday.

Investigators say she died of blunt force trauma.

They believe she was dead before someone put her body in the water.

Investigators are still trying to figure out who killed her and her husband, Russell.

A body was discovered in Lake Oconee Friday afternoon near Wallace Dam.

According to a source familiar with the scene, the body was found by a fisherman not far from the dam. The body appears to be an elderly woman, but is so badly decomposed that dental records may be needed for positive identification. The source said the body looked like it had been in the water for a long time.

Investigators believe the remains belong to Shirley Dermond.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials will perform an autopsy.

FOX 5 received a call Friday afternoon from a woman who said her husband found a body in the water at Long Shoals Boat Ramp.

FOX 5 will continue to provide new information as it becomes available.
