Balch Springs girl drowns in park pond

Posted: Updated:

A Balch Springs family is mourning after their 10-year-old daughter drowned in a pond on Sunday.

Police were called about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday about a child disappearing in the water of a pond at Walter E. Luedke Park in the 3200 block of Hickory Tree Road.

Balch Springs firefighters and police responded to the scene and began to search for the child, who was found a short time later at the bottom of the pond.

Authorities said Tamia Johnson, 10, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on Sunday night.

A candlelight vigil was held Monday to honor her memory.

"She asked me a thousand times yesterday morning could she come to the park and I told her no. And I finally let her come. We came, and that was my last time," said Antoin Lockett, the girl's father.

Lockett said he had no idea there was a pond behind the park, which opened about a month ago.
