Local veterans raise concerns about VA medical treatment

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Local veterans say they've experienced a variety of problems with the Veterans Affairs Health System in Detroit. They say they frequently wait for months to see a doctor and that medication often gets sent to the wrong address. One veteran says his identity was even stolen.

Congressman Gary Peters met with these veterans on Monday to hear their concerns about their treatment.

The concerns are brought forward as the public has been learning at least 40 veterans died waiting for care at a VA hospital in Arizona. A medical center in Colorado also reportedly falsified records to cover up long waiting times.

Secret Lists: Deaths claims roil Veterans Affairs

Congressman Peters isn't opposed to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki resigning but he says that alone won't fix the problem. He is hoping a complete overhaul of the VA Health System will fix a lot of problems that local veterans say they are facing.
