Slide fire results in closure of 89A in Sedona

SEDONA, Ariz. - The Slide Fire is leaving many people in Sedona feeling stranded.

A steady stream of motorists was politely turned away on State Route 89A in Sedona.

They cannot take the scenic road to Flagstaff because the fire is too unpredictable.

"It is pretty scary isn't it, it comes and goes you know, the smoke comes and goes and it gets pretty dark," said Ed Smariga.

Sharon Trammel and Steve Busey drove south down 89A to Seconda, now they cannot drive back.

"We were disappointed but thrilled we got to see it. We had been planning to go to the Slide Rock Recreation Area.

The closure checkpoint on 89A is located right next to the Sedona Arts Center and the question everyone is asking is when it will be open, and the answer is who knows?

The arts center is a great place to hang out and shop, but the checkpoint just outside is a reminder of the continuing wildfire threat.

"We have been worried about this for months, I hope people are safe in the Canyon or Seconda, or this area," said Shirley Albrecht.
