Boating Safety Tips for Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:
Fox 2's Amy Andrews visited the Macomb County Sheriff's Office Marine Division to get some boating safety tips for you. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham recommends the following the following on this busy holiday weekend:

-Make sure to have at least one personal floatation device per person
-Have flares available in case an emergency arises
-Carry a fully charged cell phone and dial 911 if there is an emergency, dispatchers can use the GPS location to assist in finding your boat
-The driver of the boat should not be drinking, boating while under the influence is against the law. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit is .10 percent.

Lake St. Clair is described as one of the busiest fresh-water lakes in the world, and the Sheriff's Marine Division put in over 3400 hours of patrol last year.  The men and women of the Marine Division responded to 41 search & rescue missions and had over 1000 "contacts" with boaters.
The Sheriff's Marine Division is comprised of four year-round personnel, which is augmented by a ninety-five person Reserve Deputy force.
When not patrolling the Lake St Clair, and adjacent waterways, the Sheriff's Marine Division puts on the Boater Safety curriculums in school districts across the County.  In 2013, 5400 persons were trained in Boater Safety.
Anyone with questions regarding the Marine Division or the Boater Safety curriculum is encouraged to call the Macomb County Sheriff Marine Division at (586) 469-5803.
