Dallas police have arrested a mother accused of trying to drown her children while high on PCP and marijuana.
Sonya Gardner, 35, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted capital murder. The children were ages 6 and 4.
The six-year-old told police that her mother told her “we were fixing to die.”
The incident happened on Thursday night at an apartment in Oak Cliff, where earlier in the day Gardner admitted to smoking marijuana laced with PCP.
Gardner told police she was upset because the two children kept asking for snacks. Gardner at that point decided to drown her two kids and filled a bathtub with water.
Gardner had the two kids in the tub, but then her 18-year-old son fired a gun in the air and kicked down the bathroom door. He grabbed the two kids and ran outside.
Gardner, before the attempted drowning, had also tried to burn the two children with an iron.
Dallas police said the son, Jydesmon Gardner, violated his probation by firing the gun in the air. Jydesmon is being sought by police so they can interview him about the incident. Police said they believe the teen's actions saved the lives of the two children.
A neighbor nearby, Donald Metcalf, heard the screams coming from Gardner’s apartment and also went to help.
“I grabbed both the sisters and brought them in here with my kids,” said Metcalf. “They were both soaking wet."
After Jydesmon brought down the younger sister, the door was locked behind him.
“So he kicked on it and kicked and kicked and kicked and finally got in,” said Metcalf. Sonya Gardner is currently being held at the Dallas County jail.
Family members were shocked to hear the news.
"It's a hard time for our family and we don't really understand why this happened, but at the same time, it never happened before,” said Earnest Gardner, Sonya’s brother.
Public records show 14 years ago, Sonya Gardner was charged with possession of marijuana.
"The sister I know… is fun, outgoing, full of life; the jokester of our family,” said Earnest. Loves her kids to death. The light that they are putting her in is not actually her not her at all. The kids are always happy. For this to happen this is totally out of her character."
