DALLAS - A standoff turned deadly in east Dallas Saturday morning.

Police say a man beat and shot a woman in front of several witnesses and police officers, then started shooting at police.

The standoff ended with the man dead and the woman in the hospital.

It all started at a 7-Eleven store off of Skillman Street around 6 a.m. Saturday.  A woman walked into the store, she had been beaten and said the man she was with had been holding her at gunpoint for three days.  The man then walked into the store and started beating her again, threw her into some glass and then took her outside continuing to beat her.  They got in his pickup truck and drove away.

Police arrived at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Skillman.  Police say they saw the suspect push the victim to the ground and shoot her in the neck.  Officers opened fire on the man as he ran back inside of the apartment.  The victim was taken to a local hospital and police locked the area down for several hours.  Police tried to make contact with the suspect, when SWAT officers finally entered the apartment and found the man dead.

FOX 4 last heard the victim was still at Baylor hospital and is responsive and doing well.
