DEKALB, Ill. (FOX 32 News) - Legendary NIU coach and athletic director Dr. Bob Brigham passed away Sunday in DeKalb at the age of 90.

Brigham was a World War II veteran whose association with Northern Illinois University began in 1946 as a football player and wrestler and continued for more than 50 years.

"We lost an icon, not only of Huskie athletics but the entire world of intercollegiate sport,” Northwestern Vice-President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips said. “Dr. Brigham was a pioneer and will be so deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting him."

He became an assistant football coach in 1955 and also spent 11 seasons as the Huskies head wrestling coach. He spent 19 years as the athletic director. As the athletic director, he took NIU Athletics from NCAA College Division to University Division status, oversaw the Huskies’ admission to the Mid-American Conference in 1973, enhanced NIU’s athletics facilities and saw multiple teams qualify for NCAA championships competition.

Brigham's services will begin on Tuesday, June 3 with the visitation at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 4 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb with the burial at Fairview Cemetery.

All James Carpenter wanted was to be able to run. That seems an odd wish coming from a 6-foot-5, 321-pound offensive lineman.
