Local girl dies of brain tumor one week before graduation

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -- A local girl has lost her battle with brain cancer a week before high school graduation.

You may remember Kayla Kincannon, a Lamphere High School Senior. FOX 2's Amy Andrews has been following her story for two years.

Kayla was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 16-years-old and her second tumor at 17. Friends and family said she was the strongest girl they knew.

Kayla's dream was to meet country music superstar Taylor Swift. Last year, the community worked together to launch a massive social media campaign to make her dream come true.

Kincannon used to sing along to Taylor Swift for hours in the mirror when she was a little girl, and Swift's music helped her to get through the dark times.

"To me fearless isn't the absence of fear, but living in spite of those things that scare you to death," Kayla said.

Swift found out about Kayla's story and invited Kayla and her family to lunch in Nashville.

Kayla and her family traveled to Tennessee looking for alternative treatment options, but what Kayla got was better than any medicine.

Angels of Hope Michigan is assisting Kayla's family with funeral expenses.
