Accused cop killer appears in court as own attorney

ATHENS, Ga. -

A man accused of fatally shooting a police officer was back in court Thursday in Athens and wants his jurors to come from the Atlanta area.

Jamie Hood is serving as his own attorney in his death penalty case.

Hood is accused of killing Athens-Clarke County Police Officer Elmer “Buddy” Christian and wounding Officer Tony Howard back in 2011.

Hood and prosecutors struck an agreement that the jury will come from an outside county, but the trial will remain in Athens.

Hood requested that his jury come from Fulton County or DeKalb County, but prosecutors say the two counties have had more publicity.

He told the judge he had a box of evidence showing incredible media interest in the case from the internet and social media. Hood says many people want to make his trial all about race and claims he has had a lot of death threats.
