School Reform Commission Refuses To Pass Budget

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The superintendent of Philadelphia schools and the School Reform Commission, in a bold move, decided not to adopt a budget for next school year that would include cuts to make up for a $216-million shortfall.

The district was required by city charter to adopt a budget for the 2014/2015 school year by the end of this month, but stopped short of doing so during a board meeting Thursday night.

Superintendent William Hite even tweeted during the meeting that it's one thing to fundraise for extras, but that it's unacceptable to do so for basics. He also tweeted quality schools need sufficient funding. The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers released a statement supporting the move. Parents reacted favorably, too.

"I think it's fabulous that they are rejecting a budget that's not going to educate our students. Our children need nurses, they need NTAs and our children need materials. They need good healthy choices," said parent Cecelia Thompson.

Hite said, "There's uncertainty with the city and state budget. If, in fact, we moved forward with the revenue we have now, we would have had to take a lot of actions that we would have to reverse later in the summer."

When asked if there are any legal ramifications to not adopting a budget by the deadline, officials responded the damage would be far worse to students. There's no word on when they will resume working on the budget.

FOX 29 News reached out to city officials about the district's decision. We are waiting to hear back from them.
