Belle Isle cleans the slate as a state park

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Detroit's historic Belle Isle has transformed into a raceway as the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix kicks off Friday.

But there's more to the weekend event than speed and horsepower. Grand Prix guests are also seeing transformations from restroom to picnic table and bench makeovers.

The restoration and clean-up effort is part of the state's lease agreement with the city of Detroit.
February marked the start of a new era for Belle Isle when it officially became a state park.

The Department of Natural Resources is in charge of maintaining and managing the park, which is expected to save Detroit up to $6 million a year for the next 30 years.

Other projects in the near future will include bringing water back to the popular James Scott Memorial Fountain which has been dry for years.

Crews also plan to improve many of the pathways that are currently hidden because of overgrown grass.

Officials hope Grand Prix race fans will visit the historic landmark and keep the interests of Belle Isle in overdrive for years to come.
