(WJBK) - Just ahead of Saturday's big Race for the Cure event at Detroit's Chene Park, its time to get some answers to questions about breast cancer and this year's race.

Join Deena Centofanti on Wednesday at 8:30 a..m. as she is joined by Lisa Chism DNP, APRN, BC, NCMP, FAANP, and cancer survivor Mo Meldrum, as they work to provide information about breast cancer.


Dr. Lisa Chism,

DNP, APRN, BC, NCMP, FAANP, is the medical director of the Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Women’s Wellness Center and a member of the Breast Multidisciplinary Team. A nurse practitioner for 20 years, she is a Certified Menopause Practitioner and member of the Patient Education Committee for the North American Menopause Society.

The Women’s Wellness Clinic at the Alexander J. Walt Comprehensive Breast Center in Detroit and Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills encourages women to be proactive about their health. From preventative care to diagnosis through treatment and recovery, these clinics emphasize the importance of ongoing care and careful monitoring for breast cancer.

An Oakland University graduate, Dr. Chism has appeared on television and presented extensively. Her book, The Doctor of Nursing Practice: A Guidebook for Role Development and Professional Issues, is in its second edition and used in more than 100 advanced practice nursing specialty programs across the United States. Now in the University of Michigan’s sexual health certification program, Dr. Chism is already incorporating what she is learning to help breast cancer patients with their sexual health. Recipient of Oakland University’s 2013 Nightingale Awards for Nursing Excellence and Karmanos Cancer Institute’s 2013 Heroes of Breast Cancer Compassionate Caregiver Award.

Mo Keenan Meldrum

is director of breast cancer special programs at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, where she guides activities of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the metro Detroit area (Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties). She is chair of Komen’s Detroit Race for the Cure, which is locally presented by the Institute. Since 1992, Detroit’s Race has raised and invested more than $25 million and become a top-tier event in Komen’s Race for the Cure series, welcoming 30-40,000 participants each spring to Detroit. As with all Komen Affiliates, Komen Detroit works year-round educating the community about breast cancer public policy and providing life-saving resources.

A life-long metro Detroiter, Meldrum is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy and a breast cancer survivor since 1991, with four cancer survivor family members. She coordinates community partnerships in the metro Detroit tri-county area serves on Wayne State University’s Human Investigation Committee’s Institutional Review Board, chairs the Michigan Cancer Consortium Membership Committee, is on the planning committee of the Translational Research Cancer Centers Consortium and volunteers as a patient advocate working with researchers and clinicians. A frequent guest on local television, she works with federal and state legislators advocating for strong breast health public policy.
