Traffic snarled on Interstate 80/94 after crash

Posted: Updated:
HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Traffic is backing up as crews respond to a multi-vehicle semi-truck crash on westbound Interstate 80/94 in northwest Indiana.

The crash occurred just after 3:30 p.m. between Calumet Avenue and the Illinois state line, according to a spokesman for the Indiana State Police Lowell District.

The crash also involved at least one passenger car that rolled over, and a person inside was taken to a hospital, police said.

Only the left lane of traffic is getting through as crews continue to respond, police said. Authorities could not immediately say how long the highway might be closed.

According to a witness who contacted the Post Tribune, multiple semi-trailers were involved in the crash and at least one vehicle had tipped on its side. Multiple emergency crews were on the scene. Westbound traffic is already backing up to Burr Street.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
