Police: BB Gun Prompted Penn State Abington Lockdown

ABINGTON, Pa. - A lockdown at Penn State Abington was lifted around 5 p.m. Thursday after someone called 9-1-1 and reported seeing a gunman on campus.

Fox 29 has just learned that police have arrested three students who were on student visas. Two students, both 20, are from South Korea and the other student, 21, is from China.

Police have confirmed that three students did fire a BB gun on campus. However, authorities stress they were not trying to injure anyone.

The whole ordeal had many Penn State students on edge.

“The police just came out of nowhere with M4's and told everyone to put their hands up,” said student Katia Dieudonne.

Dieudonne was prepping for a summer course in the campus library on Woodland Road when police officers burst in.

“He was like who made the call about the shotgun and everyone stood still,” she said.

A witness had seen a man on campus with the weapon, what appeared to be a rifle, but later revealed to be a BB gun.

The call came in at about 3:30 p.m. and within minutes the campus was on lockdown. Students got a text alert warning them to shelter in place.

Abington and Campus police hunted for the reported gunman.

It turns out, police say, he was a Penn State Abington student who got the text alert at home and called authorities.

“He called in immediately and said it was him and tried to explain the situation. We sent police to his location picked him up and another male who was with him,” said Abington Police Chief Bill Kelly.

According to police, they then recovered the BB gun, along with a scope and a taser.

“It did not appear there was an attempt to go and hurt anyone or anything like that. I was told they just received it in the mail, and that they wanted to show to each other and that's the reason they got together on campus,” he said.

By 5 p.m. Thursday, the lockdown was lifted and classes started up again.

Student Ishak Johnson says he never panicked, but past college shootings did cross his mind.

“The chances seemed so small that it would happen, so I had this suspicion it was a false alarm," said Johnson. So I kept that in mind throughout the whole thing.” 

Police expect the district attorney to decide whether to charge the students tonight or early tomorrow morning.
