After the investigation results: What's next for GM?

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - "I can tell you, this report is extremely thorough, brutally tough and deeply troubling," General Motors CEO Mary Barra said Thursday as she released the results of an internal investigation.

She began with an act of contrition, a mea culpa, and promised that GM would offer a compensation package for victims of ignition switch-related crashes.

Thirteen people are known to have died.

Barra said GM will continue to search to determine if more people may have been hurt from the faulty ignition switch.

"I want to first take an opportunity to again express my deepest sympathy to the families that lost loved ones and to those who were injured. I realize there are no words of mine that can ease their grief or their pain," Barra said.

Barra did not discuss financial amounts GM is preparing to pay out.

She said the independent investigation by former U.S. Attorney Anton Valukas revealed employees simply neglected to disclose ignition switch issues.

"We will do the right thing for those were were harmed. And second, we will accept responsibility for our mistakes and commit to doing everything within our power to make sure this never happens again," she said.

Barra said 15 employees were fired for either incompetency or because they simply did not do enough to bring the problem forward.

GM has now added 35 safety investigators.

She said GM is insisting employees speak out whenever they see a safety issue.

"What Valukas found was a pattern of management deficiencies and misjudgments, often based on incomplete data that were passed off at the time as 'business as usual,'" said Barra.

FOX 2's Ron Savage reports this is clearly GM's issue but it speaks to American manufacturing on a global scale, integrity and responsibility. Barra says they are fixing that.

Savage reports the Valukas report did not find conspiracy and that it did not suggest or recommend firing any employees. That decision was apparently made by General Motors.

Savage reports Barra pledged to set the new industry standard for safety and quality.
