Cubs select pitcher Jake Stinnett with second round pick

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Cubs Thursday night in the second round selected Jake Stinnett, right-handed pitcher out of the University of Maryland.

Stinnett put up a 2.65 ERA and a 7-6 record in 16 games, starting all but one, this season for Maryland. The 22-year-old senior struck out a school single season record and Atlantic Coast Conference high 130 batters. That’s good for an average of 10.4 strikeouts every nine innings, walking only 27. He also led in complete games and innings pitches in the ACC, as well as having became the seventh pitcher in the history of the program to throw a no-hitter.

In 2013, Stinnett began pitching full time and was posting an ERA of 2.83 in 16 games. That was after sharing time on the mound and at third base his first two seasons with Maryland.

He’s six-foot-four and 205 pounds. He was chosen by the Pirates in the 2013 draft, but ended up not signing with the organization.

Sinnett was recommended by area scout Billy Swoope. He is also a graduate of Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, California.

The 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft continues Friday with rounds three through 10 and finishes Saturday with rounds 11 through 40.
