Two boys, ages 9 and 16, were shot in the parking lot of a convenience store in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas.
The younger boy was with his father at the store at Scyene and St. Augustine roads around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
He was shot in the abdomen and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers found the 16-year-old victim about a block away. He was shot in the thigh and taken to a different hospital.
A friend of the teen, who asked not to be named, said the teen went to a nearby apartment building and collapsed.
"He was laying here shot up on the scene. All shot up," the friend said. "He say he got shot at the corner store and the next thing I know I called the ambulance."
The owner of a store near the shooting said his employees saw part of what happened to the 9-year-old.
"His father just grabbed him picked him and just ran behind the grocery isle to try to save his child and that was pretty bad for his father that it happened right in front of him," said convenience store owner Ersalon Banga.
The motive for the shooting is still unclear. Police questioned two 18-year-old witnesses, but said they are not cooperating and police wonder if they might have been the intended targets.
Police hope surveillance video from a camera across the street will help them identify the person responsible.
