The Many Stages Of Sandy Recovery

Posted: Updated:
Mantoloking, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Nearly two years after Superstorm Sandy, Lynn Schafer’s Mantoloking Shores home on Dory Lane is standing tall and looking good, now elevated and flood resistant.

“If the water comes through again we’re lucky because it will just take down whatever’s here. Everything is elevated,” she explained.

Schafer’s house looks like the model Sandy recovery story, but it’s also one she paid dearly for. The Schafer’s spent nearly half a million dollars over their insurance settlement just to get back home. The money mostly came out of retirement savings. However, she says most of their neighbors aren’t nearly as far along.

“If you look in the window it’s all gutted. And if you look around a lot of the houses in here you walk down the street you see gutted, gutted, gutted, gutted. I’m guessing there’s maybe ten percent of people in, if that,” Schafer explained.

A walk around the neighborhood shows deck chairs strewn about on porches, seawalls on the verge of collapse and gutted interiors. Stacy Ferris with Mantoloking Emergency Management said a quarter mile up Route 35 in Mantoloking Proper you’ve got a similar situation.

“So we had 521 homes within the borough. Every single person suffered some varying degree of damage, every single one. From water, to being completely knocked off and landing in the bay,” she explained.

Ferris says that when it comes to rebuilding, personal finances play a very big part, but there are also other factors as well.

“A lot of people are waiting for the Beach Replenishment Program to get on their way. Like we said, here in July, we’re going to be starting with steel and then the Army Corps project. We’re in hurricane season, there’s nothing up there to offer any protection right now,” Ferris said.

Beach-goers this summer are urged to show a little patience. There’s a lot more going on involving the stories of people’s lives within the walls of each home regardless of the shape it’s in.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
