Robert De Niro remembers his father in new documentary

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Actor Robert De Niro never intended for the documentary he created about his father to go beyond the eyes of his family. Robert De Niro Sr. was an artist, perhaps overlooked by the masses, but important to the iconic performer.

'Remembering The Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr.' was picked up by HBO. It was directed and produced by Perri Peltz and will air on Monday night.

At the screening held Thursday at the MOMA, De Niro spoke about the film and the studio where De Niro Sr. once worked.

“I did that documentary because I wanted to do it about my father and then HBO was interested and so that was good but it was not intended for them originally. It was intended for me to do for my family, for friends; that was the most important thing… it seemed it was right for a little less than an hour,” said De Niro.

The studio, located at the DC Moore Gallery in SoHo remains intact, just as De Niro Sr. left it before he died.

“I’m happy that I kept it. There was a moment I thought that I would disband it and give it to one of the kids but it wasn’t the right thing to do,” said De Niro.

“It’s not just one artist’s story. It’s what happens when you’re not necessarily discovered or when your star fades. It’s an eternal story,” said Peltz.

De Niro gave Peltz ten diaries belonging to his father. The personal accounts are the basis for the 40-minute documentary.

The gallery at 535 West 22nd St., 2nd, floor will be open to public for a special tour on June 6, 5 pm- 7 pm.
