CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago music artist Lupe Fiasco has joined ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ and released a new song about the disease.

The song, called 'Mission,' is meant to be a soundtrack to empower every cancer survivor and those who have lost battles with the disease. It was inspired by 54-year-old cancer survivor Kwesi Harris.

“I got the diagnosis and I began to talk about my prognosis, and I was sharing this with Lupe, and Lupe literally said, 'You need a song." I had no idea that there was going to be this song,” said Harris in an interview with FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

Harris was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and underwent treatment. He works closely with young men at Chicago State University and is using his experience to educate others on the importance of early detection and treatment.

“We want to be superhuman, and the reality is that we have to lay down so we can stand up, lay down and get our prostates checked, lay down and get our colons checked, just having a medical check-up is a good thing so you don’t check out,” said Harris.

Rush University Medical Center urologist Dr. Shahid Ekbal agrees.

“Men in general do not go to the doctor enough. If it is cancer of the prostate and the treatment may impact sex activity, they stay away,” Ekbal said.

Ekbal also said a new technique called fusion technology is being used at Rush which allows for the biopsy to be directly targeted.

“It’s a curable disease and if detected early, it’s not as bad as often portrayed,” said Ekbal.

So far on YouTube, ‘Mission’ has more than 200,000 views – every one of them getting a dose of inspiration.

“I commend Lupe. He’s a conscious artist from Chicago. There’s a lot of things he could be rapping about but instead he made a decision to pour life into people’s lives,” said Harris.
