Teachers union says it will appeal DISD firings

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS - The Teachers Alliance AFT says it plans to fight the firing of Dallas ISD coaches and assistant coaches.

In all, 15 employees were let go on Friday for allegedly violating recruitment rules to stack basketball teams.

The District was tipped off by police earlier this year while investigating the death of student Troy Causey.  He transferred from Richardson to Wilmer-Hutchins to play basketball.

There are several steps in the appeals process and several chances for the fired employees.  An employee can appeal their firing if a direct supervisor upholds the termination and the employee can appeal to the next level, like in a criminal court case.

The appeals can go all the way up to the Texas Education Agency which could then make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.  But, if the board agrees the employee should remain fired, the employee is on their own.  The last option for a fired employee is to file a civil lawsuit against the district.
