Two people died and three others were injured in China after a woman dropped a cell phone into an open pit toilet and tried to get it back.

The South China Morning Post reports the woman dropped her brand new cell phone into the cesspit while using the bathroom and her husband climbed into the pit in an attempt to get the phone back.

However, the husband fainted from the smell and gases in the pit and became unconscious. The waste in the pit was knee-deep, according to the paper. The husband’s mother then jumped into the pit in an attempt to save him, but also passed out due to the overwhelming smell.

The wife also jumped into the pit and also passed out.

After that, the woman’s father-in-law called out to neighbors to help. The father-in-law and two neighbors also became trapped in the pit.

Other residents were eventually able to pull the six people out using rope, but had to wait more than an hour for an ambulance and medical personnel to show up at the scene.

The husband and the husband’s mother died at the hospital later that day due to suffocation, according to doctors.

The wife, whose phone was dropped in the cesspit, and one of the neighbors remain hospitalized in intensive care.

The estimated value of the phone - $320.
