Metro: Silver Line behind schedule again

Posted: Updated:
TYSONS CORNER, Va. -

It appears there may be more possible delays on Metro’s Silver Line.

In a conference call with reporters on Monday, Metro's Deputy General Manager Rob Troup blamed the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which only recently turned over control of the Silver Line to the transit agency, for again falling behind schedule.

Metro says it was expecting 25 to 30 percent of the remaining items on the Silver Line punch list to be completed by now, but they are not.

Among the hold ups: the paint job on station handrails. They didn't pass inspection and need to be painted again. And up on the new station platforms are drainage issues that need addressing.

Metro says public address speakers throughout the new line are in, but haven't been tested yet.

However, the training of its workers and testing of new systems are going along smoothly.

Metro says nothing outside the punch list is causing any problems right now.

Metro's Troup says he can't say whether Phase 1 of the Silver Line will open on time, which is now slated for mid to late July.

He says there needs to be a week of simulated service first on Orange and Blue Line trains.

The $6 billion Silver Line is scheduled to one day bring Metrorail service to Dulles Airport and beyond.
