Campaign aims to create luxury island in Chicago Harbor

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Picture this: A luxury island resort on Lake Michigan. On board you would find pools, shops, a health spa and a party venue.

Sounds like a dream, right? Well, with your help, that dream could become a reality.

Breakwater Chicago has developed  a new attraction that would provide the first major public boating destination in the Chicago Harbor.

The co-founders of the floating resort have launched a Kickstarter campaign to help raise money for the project. They say they want to create and entertainment destination.

According to a release from Breakwater, the vessel would be anchored about a mile offshore and offer visitors a breathtaking view of the city and lake. Visitors would be able to access the resort by boat or water taxi.

During the colder months, there is no need to book a trip to Florida! The Breakwater vessel would be anchored near the shore and enclosed by a transparent dome to offer Chicagoan an escape from the polar vortex!

If all goes well, the party boat would be finished by next year.

“My mission for Breakwater Chicago is to create an entertainment destination that’s unique to Chicago. It will become an international attraction bringing visitors to experience our world-class city in an unprecedented way. While I’m proud that this vessel will be luxurious, it will also be family friendly, exceptionally safe and environmentally conscious,” said Beau D’Arcy, president and chief executive manager of Breakwater Chicago LLC.

D'Arcy claims the attraction would help reach Mayor Rahm Emanuel's goal of bringing 55 million visitors a year to Chicago by 2020.

In order to make the dream a reality, Breakwater is relying on financial help from various city, state and federal agencies. If you want to get involved in the campaign, or to learn more, click here.
