Family seeks justice after grandmother killed, hit by multiple hit-and-run drivers

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A family is seeking justice after multiple drivers ran over their loved one, killing her.

"Why [hasn't] anyone come forward? How come no one is asking anything about what happened to my grandmother?" Tamikia Davis wants to know.

"I thought someone would come and say something by her being 71 years old. I mean, she's a grandmother," says Kena Mitchell.

Your neighborhood should be your safe haven. But we all know that's not always the case nowadays.

It should be the place where people lend a hand to help you and not leave you in the street to die.

Every hit and run in hideous, horrifying and the unthinkable, but what happened to Jacqueline Mitchell at Seymour and Hayes on Friday, May 16, will not just blow your mind, it will break your heart.

"She was going to the local party store that she walked to every day," Mitchell, her daughter, tells FOX 2's Andrea Isom.

"As she crossed the street a vehicle came and ran her down, kept going, second vehicle came, hit her. He did stop. As he proceeded to call the police a third vehicle came, struck my grandmother down and kept going," Davis says.

"Backed up over her and left her, just left her there," says Mitchell. "Got out the car, looked under the car and [saw] my mom pinned under there and backed up and left."

"How could you get out and see this and just keep going, get back in your vehicle and go like it's nothing?" Davis wants to know.

Detroit police investigators tell us Mitchell was being a good citizen and was walking inside the cross-walk, abiding by the law, when the others decided to break it.

At night you can not see much at the intersection of Seymour and Hayes on the city's east side. The streetlight that hovers over it is out.

"The traffic light was working but the street light was out and it's still out this day," Davis says.

If someone out there knows anything about what happened you're asked to contact Detroit police or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
