MTA post-9/11 security plan delayed

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's post-Sept. 11 system-wide security upgrades will take until 2017 -- nine years longer -- partly because of damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

That's according to an audit by the state comptroller's office to be released Wednesday.

It says the delay will cost at least $700 million more than originally projected.

The audit reportedly also blames the delay to reductions in federal funding and the MTA expanding its security plan to include more facilities, reported the Newsday.com.

While the MTA has made important security improvement, the audit says the first phase of its capital program is not finished.

It says the biggest delay in the now $1.3 billion capital security initiative involves installing 3,000 surveillance cameras and 1,400 access-control devices in stations and tunnels.

Police responded to the Brooklyn Bridge where two whitewashed American flags were raised on Tuesday. It is not clear who raised the flags or why. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appeared to have been removed. The white flags were placed on the stone supports that hold cables above the span. Several officers scaled the bridge and lowered one of the flags at about 11 a.m. and the second about 20 minutes later.

The man accused of driving the tractor-trailer that slammed into a police officer operating a radar gun in Waldwick, New Jersey, has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide. Ryan Cumberbatch, of Brooklyn, made an initial court appearance in Hackensack on Monday. Cumberbatch only spoke during the brief hearing to say he understood the charge. His attorney said they wouldn't comment out of respect for the police officer's family.
