Man released in rape case that judge criticized

DALLAS (AP) - A 20-year-old man has been released from a short jail sentence for raping a teenage schoolmate whose case got extra scrutiny after the judge questioned whether she was a victim.

Sir Young was released from the Dallas County jail Saturday.

State District Judge Jeanine Howard in April gave Young five years' probation, including 45 days in jail. Young had admitted to raping a 14-year-old girl at a Dallas high school when he was 18.

Howard didn't order prison time or standard probation conditions for Young, saying he was not a typical rape suspect, and that the girl "wasn't the victim she claimed to be."

Prosecutors protested the sentence and the judge's comments. After Howard recused herself, a new judge restored probation conditions, but could not order a more stringent sentence.
