Up At Bat With Special Olympics Athlete John DeLisa

Posted: Updated:
Flemington, New Jersey (MY9NJ) - The Special Olympics baseball tournament is rolling through the Garden State!

John DeLisa is a Special Olympic baseball athlete and he is getting ready to compete in this year’s Games being held at Healthquest Park in Flemington, New Jersey. His mother Monica DeLisa, said that the entire family will be in attendance and they are ready to cheer him on!

“Both John’s dad and I, and his sister Renee, are very proud of him. Just over the moon proud of him. John has some shortcomings that make it difficult for him to do certain things, but then he also has some great strengths,” she shared of her son.

DeLisa said that he has always loved baseball and he can’t wait to show his talents on the field.

“I learned playing baseball when I was very young. My father had a baseball team in our town, and he always told me to keep my elbow up and swing,” DeLisa shared.

It takes a lot of training to get ready for the Special Olympic Games and DeLisa is no stranger to hard work and exercise.

“I do mostly running, everything that has to do with baseball. Make sure you exercise and you do your stretches. We try to keep in good shape to keep our stamina up to outlast the other team. Maybe they aren’t in as good of shape as us,” DeLisa said.

DeLisa will be competing for the gold on June 16th.

Good luck John!
